The town of Southern Shores is just south of Duck and just north of Kitty Hawk.  Like most communities in the Outer Banks, the ocean side of the community is predominantly vacation-oriented while the west side is primarily year-round residents.  Southern Shores has maintained much of its natural beauty, with significant natural vegetation and trees. It also enjoys private beach access and parking, which means if you aren't staying there you won't be able to gain access to the beach.  This provides a tranquil setting away from the crowds of the primary beaches for those living or vacationing here.  Southern Shores has limited dining and shopping but has wonderful bike and walking trails to easily get around.
