Manteo NC History

If you have heard the story of "The Lost Colony" then you will know some of most important history of Roanoke Island, which hosted the first English-speaking colonists in America. Manteo was the site of Sir Walter Raleigh's attempt to establish the first English colony in the New World in 1584. Although this settlement was later abandoned, in July 1587 another party of 110 English colonists arrived in the New World. And on August 18 Eleanor Dare, one of the colonists, gave birth to the first English-speaking child in the New World, Virginia Dare. Sadly, it was only a week later when the baby's grandfather, Captain John White, was forced to return to England for badly needed supplies. But when he returned 3 years later, there were no signs of his granddaughter, the colonists, or even their homes. In fact, the only sign of human presence were the words "CRO" and CROATOAN" etched on nearby trees. The fate of the colonists remains a mystery today.

Where did the name Manteo and Wanchese come from?

The towns Manteo and Wanchese are both namesakes of Native American chiefs who befriended the New Americans. Chief Manteo and Chief Wanchese were the only Native Americans who later made the voyage to England with Sir Walter Raleigh.
